Located in Woodland, California, Delta Oilfield Services, Inc. was founded in 1976 by Don Tinsley. Originally the firm started as a trucking company servicing drilling rigs in the Northern California region. The company had a fleet of vacuum trucks, roll-off trucks and dump trucks that handled clean-up and contamination containment at the oil pumping sites.

In 1990 Don’s son, Don Tinsley Jr. took over the reins of the company. Within a few short years Don Jr. added two other divisions to Delta Oilfield Services. The first new division within the company was Emergency Response. This division handles calls for the city of Sacramento whenever there is an oil spill. The crew contains the spill, cleans the area and then studies the contaminated materials to determine the proper method of disposal. The second division, which was started in 1993, handles building demolition projects. The company is a member of the National Demolition Association.

One of the first major demolition contracts Delta Oilfield Services achieved was with Caltrans. The $6 million dollar contract called for Delta Oilfield Services to demolish all the buildings sitting in the right-of-way area throughout the Fresno area in order to clear the site for the construction of a massive new freeway project. The entire project took four years to complete. The company also demoed five enlisted men’s quarters at Mather Air Force Base where a new administration building was built for the Office of Emergency Services. Another major project the company completed that offered some unique challenges was demoing and toxic waste containment and removal on a site for CALPERS. Delta Oilfield Services came in after another contractor had removed the structure. Because the previous contractor lacked a Hazardous Waste license, Delta was faced with the removal of 2,000 tons of concrete and over 3,500 cubic yards of contaminated soil, much of which was rated Class 1 with high arsenic and lead content.

In addition to major projects for Caltrans and other State agencies, Delta Oilfield Services is also ready and capable of handling smaller private demolition and waste removal projects as well. Currently the company is just completing a demolition and removal project for a private homeowner in Walnut Creek. While demoing a 1,500 square foot home may seem easy, Delta Oilfield Services once had a unique set of challenges to contend with on this project. The owner, Bill Phelps, is planning to rebuild and his building contractor required that the flooring remain in place. Instead of the normal procedure for demolition of a house by collapsing the entire building, this project required that it be demolished a section at a time in order not to damage any of the hardwood floors. In addition to the need for careful attention on the demolition phase, Walnut Creek has stringent recycling laws that must be met by the demo contractor in order to be able to do the job. The city requires that 75% of all demoed materials must be recycled. In order to comply with the job’s requirements Delta Oilfield Services took all of the demoed materials to a transfer station to have the various recyclable materials separated. By the time the project is completed, the company will have recycled some 100 cubic yards of debris and 100 tons of concrete. Delta Oilfield Services also recently completed demolition work on a rifle range at Modesto Community College. Once again due to the unique situation of the site, the workers at Delta Oilfield Services were faced with a number of challenges. In addition to the various structures demolished at the site, the range itself was built 10 feet below grade. Due to the fact that gun powder and metal was prevalent at the site, the soil had to be tested for contamination. The company removed 300 cubic yards of debris materials from the site.

Delta Oilfield Services has a number of projects coming up in the next few weeks. The company will be handling the demolition of the Emerald Bay Hotel in Lake Tahoe. In addition to the demoing of the 7,500 square foot structure, the company will also be removing 9,800 square feet of asphalt from the hotel parking lot. Delta Oilfield Services will also be handling the demoing of asphalt and the removal of all underground utilities for the Burlingame School district at Burlingame High School. The site to be demoed housed portable classrooms, which have been removed. Some 2,000-3,000 square feet of asphalt and concrete will be removed from the site in order to build a soccer field at the school.

In order to be able to handle such a diverse number of projects, Delta Oilfield Services has a solid inventory of equipment. In addition to the fleet of trucks the company owns for their trucking division, they also have five excavators. The company recently purchased a new Volvo excavator and has plans to add another before year’s end. The other excavators are CAT and John Deere. The company obtained their Cat equipment from SunState Equipment in Turlock. The Volvo excavator was purchased from Mathews Machinery in Sacramento. Along with this equipment the company also owns various attachments, a number of dump trucks and a transfer truck which is used to haul soil.

One of the primary reasons for Delta Oilfield Services success with the demolition division is Operations Manager, Juan Sanchez. Juan has been with the company for thirteen years and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the job. Juan was quick to point out that equipment operator Joe Ortiz was one of the reasons for company’s successful handling of field operations. “Joe has been with the company ten years and is a very skilled operator,” said Juan. He also pointed to Office Manager, Bridget Jimenez and Contract Administrator, Beverly Sandoval as playing important roles within the company. “Bridget oversees the entire office staff and makes sure things keep running smoothly,” said Juan. “Beverly handles all of the contracts and goes over them to make sure every “I” is dotted and everything is correct on all of the company’s contracts.” Delta Oilfield currently has an office and field staff of approximately thirty employees. “Finding good qualified employees has been a challenge,” said Juan. “There is plenty of work in California which is good. These conditions can also make it a challenge to find skilled workers. Because there is so much work currently going on in the area, qualified workers such as drivers and equipment operators are in great demand. We have been lucky to have gotten some very good people who are working for us.”

It is because of the many challenges that Juan faces on a regular basis that he enjoys what he does. “I don’t like to be in the office,” said Juan. “I prefer being out in the field. Traveling to different sites and having each job present its own set of challenges is what makes this job exciting. Having the opportunity to work with different clients and complete a job successfully is very rewarding.”

Big or small, easy or complicated, Delta Oilfield Services, Inc. has the means and the know how to undertake and complete the project on schedule in a safe and professional manner. Cc
